The Boatyard (Reduced Version)

I had fun with this composition, it is the simplified version of a larger painting. I live by the beach on Vancouver Island and this is what I imagined it looked like maybe in the early sixties. Mind you, there are still places like this, today on the island. The boat in front, which has appeared before on my blog, is an old water taxi called the "Steel Maid". Click on picture for a better view.

Hi Ron.
I've been lurking quietly here lately. Nice paintings you've posted recently. The "Backyard at Northbend" is so vibrant it almost looks like you used florescent colors. The Boatyard is nice, too.

MicheLLe ;-)

The lines on the boat are really crisp, excellent job. Cool move with having a couple birds sitting around. What is that oblong object down on the right side? I thought it was a coffin at first.

Thanks, Grimm, that would be an old wooden bottom of a whatzit which was common nowhere in particular and rarely seen all over the place up and down the coast. Until that is I documented it in my painting. But I do like the coffin interpretation.

Well, I can't think of much worse an offense than omitting an L from my name, but I guess I'll forgive you, just this once.

Where can I get some of that highway marker paint? I need to paint my car so a drunk won't run into it again.

You may be onto something there. Paint the cars of all persons convicted of drunk driving Day-Glo orange. No, wait. Just take away their damn license.

You're safe to assume that he didn't kill me. Unless I'm blogging from "the other side". eeeek! I see drunk people.

Now you have to read the story.. I'll be back!

Ron the boat is pointing to the captain who's just off frame.. he's brown bagg'n a green death just before he takes a nap in yon car. In the house his wife is cooking fish head soup and dried rice... she's got a mean left hook and a sharp right eye. Camel burning the cutting board.. wash still on the line.

Prolly pretty close, it was wild here with loggers and fisherman and hippies.

This painting has a lovely feeling of movement.
I like the outstanding purity and transparency you achieve in your colors (and the bird delicately perched on top of the boat.......:)

Thanks, Jennifer-I kept this version simple as I had previously done a couple of very textured, complicated versions.

It's a crystal clear painting with a new vision. Extremely good.

Thanks Michele, sometimes I worry they are too goofy, then I worry they're not goofy enough. They are figments of my imagination-I want them to have character (quirks?) but still be well done.

Ron .. you are a real mensch - or is that menschski in Russian?

How about Menshevik?

Oh yeah like that one better! Hey I'm really keen on the image of loggers, hippies, and fishermen(women too)... what could go wrong? Now that's a movie I'd go see! Maybe some bikers too... hmmm

Ron Morrison said...

Always bikers of which I am one.
