Alone on the Prairie

You picke'em. Portraits of a survivor. This was one of the first cars I ever painted. He was in a pile, which was dismantled and the cars were put up for auction. No one bought anything, they were scrapped, and the owner was vilified for years as the guy who killed all the beautiful old cars. Examine closely by binking.

I really lilke the first one. It kind of looks like one of those photos people take of people who have lived a really hard but really interesting life. You know if you just sit down with them for 5 minutes you'll get a story :D

I've been looking at your stuff for a while, and really enjoying it! When you show three versions of a subject, I can never choose a favorite, just favorite parts of each one. I love the portrait quality of the top one, without any background or bright color to take away from those fascinating old features. In the second one, I get a slightly spooky feeling, like the car that can't be killed is creeping, Terminator-like, through the grass. The third one has that great extra wire hanging out of the "eye" like a tear. I also love the colors you used here on the body... and the grass... and that little rainbow looking spot... and the horizon background. Hey! I picked a favorite! Third. Definitely.

The bottom one is really nice. Great colors and atmosphere. The one on the white background is nice, too.

Just as long as they don't want money for drugs or alcohol. Thats exactly the thing, N.N. When I first got the idea to paint them, I was intrigued by the anthropomorphism; where had they been, what had they seen. Also the shapes were so much fun to paint and I could experiment/explore all I wanted with colour, texture, and composition. Thanks for the hello.

Thanks, Michelle, have you ever thought of joining the Wet Canvas just for fun?

Top for me.. commands a regal presence in its coloring and lack of background. This one really stands out - alone!

Thanks, W.K., did you notice the date on it?

Hey Ron..some red x boxes showing on my monitor, but the third (?)pic w/o the background is killer! And the 5th pic (car1_8x10.jpg)is my favorite piece I've seen so far, love that one. Nick

Thanks for the visit, Nick. Most of these posts are character studies I've done over the years- I gather them together for the bigger pics.

If I have to choose, it's the third one. Just love the color harmony and the way it sits peacefully in the beauty of the landscape. But they all have something terrific in them.
Your drawing is superb and the way you use watercolor is very loose and fresh.
I love it!
