I started painting with watercolours in 1976 with a set of pans that I had left over from high school. I've always loved the shapes and colours of old vehicles as they settle in for the long rust. I especially enjoy creating scenes using characters I have collected over the years. These paintings are from my imagination. Check out the sales blog under "Links and Friends".

I love these - what's the deal? The top one is great, love the reds.
Ron - this is good work! May I enquire about the nature of the show? Takes courage to be in a show.. I haven't been invited to be in a show for a while - like some artists I know - and therefore no need for courage (on my part) ...
You have us Ron! Maybe I shouldn't have said that.........
I appreciate the fact that I have cyber-friends. I will explain my view of shows later, I'm off to the last day.
These are all nice, Ron. We all want to hear about the show. Hope the last day goes well for you.
Ron, I agree with you re: shows. I truly hate them and that's why I don't do them anymore. The work you have posted today is truly spectacular. They are fresh, vibrant and full of joy.
The second one's my favorite :D
Thanks, gang, here's the skinny..
Shows are a crap shoot, my paintings are different than living room art. People really don't know whether they are well done or not and it really doesn't matter. People used to want to talk about watercolour and how colourful my paintings are...now not so much. Theres no buzz, no excitement and people with inferior art get more attention, too many artists, too many shows, not enough customers.
Two of the dumbest comments I hear over and over at shows are "I like it but I don't know anything about art". That tells me several things - mostly that they aren't looking for something that stirs thier souls - they want something that will make them look smart...and theres not enough art in world to do that.
The other one is the woman with her five kids saying to her friend in a not so discreet whisper "I could have done that!" It makes me want to point at the monkey in her stroller and say "A couple of drinks and I could have done that."
Thanks for making me laugh. My art failure rests on my shoulders its not the worlds fault. I chose to paint cars. I have had success, just not recently. I am a contrarian but there is always the possibility that I am just not good enough. I am perfectly capable of painting popular subjects and producing mediocre crap. But I don't want to. My truth is that it might be time to do something else.
Seems to be that mediocre crap is a steady paycheck, but you get bored easily. Plus you can't stand back and just look at it and be like, 'wow, I'm awesome'.
I like your leaning truck. It looks depressed, but not in a sad way...kind of like a crying clown?
Hi Ron, Your work is really beautiful. Judith
Thanks, Grimm.
Thanks, Judith.
Oh gawd, sounds like it was a rotton one, Ron. You shouldn't be letting anyone know it wasn't good. You should be crowing about all the great connections and potential sales like everyone else. You know, be positive, upbeat. You know what I did last time I did that show, don't you? I went for the first day, in the pouring rain stuck in some hindquarters of the garden with portapotties and almost impossible to navigate to because of the mud and foliage. The only visitors to my booth seemed to have fkng machettes, gumboots, pith helmets, dilated pupils and drooled. So I buggered off and never went back. Had a great artless weekend. I basically paid not to go, and it was a great investment. The poor show has nothing to do with your work, of course. Nice new pieces.
This whole discussion has been hashed so many times with so many artists I know, myself included it pays to step back and take away any expectations of what might occur at the "next show". Expectations are a killer. Are we artists die hard art and art show junkies? If people get to you with their comments, it's time to bow out and search your soul for the art within. Did you ever wonder that instead of your art not being good enough, it could be too good? Hmmm, I have a philosophy that goes like this ...the general populace is pretty stupid. sheep looking to follow a leader.
Hi Michele,
If you read my previous statements regarding the show, you will know that I had no expectations and nobody made any comments that were a problem. Its not the fault of the buying public or lack thereof. I have been standing back for thirty years so perspective is not the issue. I am not irrational or deluded beyond an acceptable amount. The fact is I used to sell more than I do now, I had a little luck and now...Nickel and dime marketing like the DPs is useless for me. I'm not sure what the answer is, but better marketing is a step I will have to take. Its just annoying.
Quit snivelin' youngster. If you figgered you could sit around doin the artsy fartsy thing while the rest of us had to do honest work you were dreamin. When I was a kid before dirt was even invented why we had to....
You know that artsy fartsy things only works for them that dont need it. ive seen it & I know. Yeah, Ron, I gottcha. I think you should go into illegal stuff myself. jeez all that talent so going to waste. When gasoline goes to $5 a gallon this summer, then nobody will really want to see any cars of any kind. You should see all the vehicles for sale here, rv's, trucks, anything that guzzles is goin out the door. mile after mile of for sale signs. nobody buying....wonder why
Funny thing is that here gas is way over five dollars a gallon and our dollar is at 92 cents American. Canada is a net exporter of oil but we pay more. At this point its not the end of everything, it may be in the future.
Hi Ron. The old truck is my favorite of those 3. I think your cyber friends have said what we all have said many times. I remember that show Clive was talking about and he really did disappear but you and I both made sales that weekend. Cheer up, we have the Originals Only to look forward to.
I know you just got done with a busy weekend and I don't really expect you to do it but I tagged you! If you read today's post you'll see what I'm talking about. If you don't you can claim ignorance!
Thanks Dorothy, the pictures are great, I will publish them on my other blog if thats okay?
I'm flattered N.N., but I'm sorry I won't play. I'm a contrarian and I find it hard to do these kind of things. However, I must say I enjoyed the Reverend's response.
Ron, negative people are much more fun to be around than positive types. Both are part of my personality and only my negative side makes me laugh. I do two or three shows, called conventions, every year and I can never predict how they'll go. Sometimes sales after are better than at the convention. What's lauded at one show will be ignored at another.
A thought: with all this work, have you ever thought of making a book proposal of it? You could write about all the cars and what they were like when new, how long they remained popular and what was good about them. Chronicle Books publishes stuff like that. You need an angle though, it can't just be an art book. Think about it.
I like the new paintings. The hollow 'eyes' of the last two make them seem stunned.
Thanks Tom, cursing the darkness is way more fun than lighting a damn candle unless its a roman candle and you've got a coupla gallons of gas (siphoned of course) for pyrotechnical purposes.
Hello to citizens of glorious empire of North America under munificent ruler King George II. I look it up munificent in dictionary now can spell two big words. Read in other book United States own Canada anyway. Plus sell back gas for more money. What a country some day I come over. Maybe sell back jeans with holes.
Anyway never mind. Power go out over here get pretty dark every tuesday when porn special download on from black market. Circuts overload lots cursing darkniss. But I say good thing power go out, wife not porn queen can't see her in dark.
Thats swell Igor, thanks for sharing.
You know what I think would make us feel better? (aside from a few drinks) I think we ought to perpetrate a ruse on the "I want something to match the sofa" crowd. It will be great fun - we can pool our money and run glitzy ads for a very posh juried art show listing ourselves as the exhibitors. The trick will be that we will omit the address for the show. Then the next week we'll all send in glowing reviews of the show. If we do this a couple of times they'll be begging to buy our work - what do ya think?
You are deelightfully devious.
