Fun With Rusty Wrecks And Derelict Houses

This is my 100th post on the DPs. I like this painting so thats what you get. Its painted on the back of another painting with opaque w/c-so everything was agin me from the start. I enjoyed the challenge of using materials that were less than Grade A. I have also enjoyed the comments and my new cyber- friends. I have not had a serious offer for a painting yet (from the DPs). Good thing I have actually sold paintings in real life for substantial prices or I would be quite discouraged. I wish more people would comment all over the blogosphere cuz if you ain't going to sell you may as well chat. Thanks Everybody! Beware "I.E.D." Coupe de Jour

Okay, here's the deal-I just like to play with the shapes and colours and intensities (values). When the shapes become semi-abstractions the fun begins! This car is the same as the one two posts ago. I am bored to tears painting landscapes or portraits as everybody else would be bored painting "old stuff". But there are a number of people who paint this subject matter-so I am not the only silly person. Oh wait a minute I forgot to mention Michele's article see below for link. Bink to blow up for better viewing pleasure.

Break down in this rig and you'd end up walking her home. This is another rare model-amazingly one remains, amazing because there were none in the first place. Come on people stay awake, has everybody read the article yet?

Please read Michele's Article as it is interesting and educational and she put a lot of work into it.

The Gathering

I painted this in 1980 and I'm putting it up again so that it becomes part of my "gallery" on the Daily Painters. I think that the gallery is a fine thing. I kept this painting over the years as a "core piece". It took me ten days to paint with a 000 brush. Click to blow up.

The Boatyard (Reduced Version)

I had fun with this composition, it is the simplified version of a larger painting. I live by the beach on Vancouver Island and this is what I imagined it looked like maybe in the early sixties. Mind you, there are still places like this, today on the island. The boat in front, which has appeared before on my blog, is an old water taxi called the "Steel Maid". Rusticity

This is a compilation piece with characters from all over. Rusticity means being rustic or rural, it does not mean "being rusted". Click on this painting to blow it up or enlarge it even- then you can actually see it.

Vintage Tin

There is a certain intangible quality about 0ld tin, as it sits rusting away in fields and junkyards, that fascinates those who discover it. There is a mysterious, eerie sensation of looking into the past through the face of a survivor that compels artists and photographers to preserve these vestiges of simpler times in their paintings and photographs.

These tin derelicts assume attitudes of defiance, puzzlement, and resignation in their stand against the onslaught of weather and metal scavengers. Paint blisters and peels under the scorching sun, revealing layers of colour and primer that both blend and contrast in expressions of abstract art. Faded scales of original blues and greens flake from oxidized surfaces as old metal turns to natural hues.

Memories lie in these metal shells like the dust on their dashboards which even the wind cannot blow away. Faint traces of things past remembering are reflected in glass that is almost opaque, and chrome that is dull and yellow. Shreds of rotten upholstery, hanging from roofs and torn from seats, provoke speculation about particular circumstances that are now long forgotten.
